Barefoot or Deck Shoes Only When Using Teak Decking For Boats

By Tom Erwin

Many luxury yachts and private boats have teak decks and cabins because of the resilience and water resistance of teak wood. Teak is the preferred choice for decking because of its qualities and beauty. A boat owner would want to preserve this as much as is possible, so there are some rules that should apply to any guests and owners with a teak-deck boat.

Teak Decking Options

1. Teak wood is the preferred and standard wood for ship decks; however , it is pretty pricey.

2. Some yacht owners are immune to any costs so this won't be an issue for some.

3. For people that do need to be frugal, there are 1 or 2 different options:

Synthetic teak decking is a man-made material made to appear like teak. It can be pretty sturdy, and a lot less expensive.

Thin veneer teak wood strips over a ply board base. This allows for the appearance of teak without the weight and cost of full thickness teak. This could last over 15 years with correct maintenance, but it will not be as durable as full teak wood decking material.

4. Builders can take almost six months to custom fit teak decking onto a ship or yacht.

Caring for Teak Decking and Teak Furniture

1. Do not scrub the deck with cruel scrubbers or cleaner. Mop gradually with teak cleanser or a mild solution of bleach, washing detergent, and water.

2. Scrubbing will cause damages to the surface of the wood, and if it is done against the grain, it'll show up when sealed or oiled.

3. Once deck has been mopped, it should be allowed to dry out thoroughly in the sunshine for no less than 1 or 2 days.

4. A couple of times a year (dependent on weather exposure and use) the teak deck should be sealed with the proper teak sealant made particularly for ship decks. This kind of sealant is going to be more dear, but much more

5. Once the deck is sealed properly, it can be maintained with occasional mopping.

Using Teak Decking

1. Teak is well known for its traction ability, which is essential on a ship. But black-soled shoes can cause damage to the wood, so ship owners will prefer their guests wear precise boat deck shoes or go shoeless.

2. Teak can stain with wine, coffee, tanning oils, and some other drinks and food. It's really important the spill be cleaned off right away then cleaned again immediately with soapy water or teak cleaner. It may be able to fight with mold, rot, water, and pests, it is defenseless against certain drinks and food.

3. The boat owner may want to go back over it a few days later with some sealant if necessary.

Owning a yacht is a pricey venture, but with it carries guarantee of many great adventures. If this is something that excites you, you will want to be sure that when you do purchase a ship you can recall this info so you can make the best decision about your decking material. Remember to let your visitors know the shoes protocol when they come visit!
